Q. Who are INKEx?
A. Established in 2009, Irish Nonprofits Knowledge Exchange (INKEx) is an Irish nonprofit company whose mission is to promote the visibility, accountability and transparency of Irish nonprofits. Its funding comes from government, philanthropies and corporate donors, and its board is drawn from the nonprofit and private sectors.
Q. What is irishnonprofits.ie?
A. irishnonprofits.ie is a free public website providing searchable access to the most comprehensive database of nonprofits in Ireland. The site contains data compiled from regulatory sources and information provided by the nonprofits themselves.
Q. How does it work?
A. Irish Company Law provides for the public disclosure of all company filings with the Companies Registration Office (CRO). INKEx acquires a daily feed of returns made by nonprofit companies to the CRO, which it digitizes and stores in a custom-built database. Extracts from this database are published on irishnonprofits.ie, where all of the nonprofit companies listed has its own self-managed micro-site. Non-companies with a CHY number from Revenue are also listed, but with less information.
Q. Do I have to pay to use the website?
A. No, thanks to public and philanthropic funding, irishnonprofits.ie is free of charge for the public and for all organisations listed on the site.
Q. Why is this website important?
A. Until now, information about this sector has only been available from a limited number of sources – individual nonprofits, a handful of published directories which are limited in scope, and regulatory authorities such as the CRO. Now the public can visit the irishnonprofits.ie website at any time and easily access information about the nonprofit sector.
Q. What kinds of information can I find on the website?
A. Users will find detailed information regarding the purpose, governance, and finances of about 8,000 nonprofit companies in Ireland. This includes nonprofits active in the fields of arts, heritage, sport, education, research, health, local, community or international development, philanthropy, religion, social justice, and the environment. Please click here to learn more about the sources and kinds of data in the Irish Nonprofits Database.
Q. Who will find this website useful and why?
A. irishnonprofits.ie is useful for a wide range of interest groups, including: people interested in learning more about nonprofits in their area; donors or grant-makers looking for data to inform their giving; policy analysts or journalists interested in the sector; nonprofits hoping to reach new audiences; people searching for volunteering or work opportunities.
Q. How do I search the site?
A. You can start your search by going to the search page, or by using the Nonprofits Database Search bar located on the top right hand side of the site.
Q. What if I need a more detailed analysis of the information?
A. Our database holds a vast quantity of high-quality regulatory and financial information about the nonprofit sector in Ireland. This data can be used for a variety of business, regulatory and philanthropic purposes. We would be happy to discuss the ways in which the database could help meet your specific needs. Please contact us for more information about our fee-based data services.
Q. I can’t find my favourite charity – I thought this was a charity website?
A. There are micro-sites for about 8,000 public benefit nonprofits on irishnonprofits.ie, but as yet we don’t have detailed regulatory information about those that are not incorporated as companies: trusts, religious congregations, other unincorporated associations. We plan to include these as soon as regulatory data on charities becomes available.
