Irish Nonprofits Knowledge Exchange (INKEx) has built the first extensive database of Irish charities, NGOs and philanthropies derived from regulatory sources, and is putting this information to work for them by publishing it on a free public website.

Until now, information about this sector has been available only from the individual nonprofits themselves, from a handful of published directories which are limited in scope, and from regulatory authorities (for example the Companies Registration Office).

More than 15,000 companies limited by guarantee file accounts and other relevant information annually with the CRO, of which at least 8,500 are constituted for public benefit purposes.

Initially, our database will contain information about these companies, more than half of which have a CHY number from Revenue.

Using this public domain information, we have built a database and intend to maintain it up to date, publishing current information on our website and archiving the rest.

During 2010, in consultation with the sector, we commissioned a public website where this information will be freely available in an easily searchable form. Each listed organisation will have its own five-page microsite, which may be augmented at will. During 2011, we will test this with and develop it further in cooperation with a group of about 300 organisations, before launching the site to the general public.

In time, the INKEx website will be a source not just of information on Irish nonprofits, but also a venue to exchange knowledge and experience, and the platform for a variety of web-based applications serving the sector and others.
