Until the sector is regulated by the provisions of the Charities Act, 2009, there is no legal framework for the registration of charities in Ireland. This is one reason we prefer to use the term ‘nonprofit’. This website carries information about the widest possible number of public benefit nonprofit entities in Ireland.

About 7,980 nonprofits (the number changes a little every month) have been granted charitable tax exemption under Section 207, Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997. A little over half of these are incorporated under the Companies Acts and  and they are listed with individual micro-sites on this website.

The rest of the unincorporated bodies with CHY status – which are constituted as trusts, or friendly societies, or unincorporated associations, will be listed here shortly.

We plan to enlarge the database further in 2012.
